Reolink Argus Pro and Argus PT wireless cameras
Reolink camera programming – November 1, 2020
https://github.com/Benehiko/ReolinkCameraAPI/issues/15
Reolink support ( support@reolink.com ) sent me a ' cgi-jsonv1.1.pdf '
describing JSON programming but it has all the commands for the other type
cameras other than just for the battery powered Argus Pro and Argus PT versions.
I am now trying to make sure that these commands will work on all their
platforms or if not, I want a description to the commands for the battery
systems since I have both of the cameras now and want to build my own personal
version of the user interface to handle camera processes that are not built into
the Argus Pro or the Argus PT ( like presets or a scan function for the PT
version that I could not believe was not already in those cameras )... I just
found the ' CGI_command.pdf ' and have not had a chance to look thru it yet )
If anybody has any code created for these, please let me know. I haven't been
building software for a good while ( Disabled, hit by a drunk late to a softball
game in a Ford F150 4x4 ( 45mph ) while coming home from work on my motorcycle (
25 mph ) from the left side as he went high on a ' Y '... I somehow jerked my
left leg up or he would have took it off as he went over my motorcycle ) and
trying to get back into the Microsoft Visual Studio 2019 . I used to build
software for test and control systems using assembly, Pascal, C and C++ while
working for United Technologies before 2001. ( and a lot has changed since
then<G> )

Reolink Support finally gives me the facts on the battery cameras Argus Pro and Argus PT wireless camera systems
November 1, 2020 @ approximately 8:30 - 9:00 AM EST
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
( My reply to Reolink Support about the client software and no plans for giving their customers access to the programming features internal to the battery powered camera systems ... REALLY DISAPOINTING ! )
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
.... OK...?? Then I have been wasting my time trying to even think about doing
this then ? Why does the client software even have the preset function coming up
for the camera if there is no plan to every use it ? This is very disappointing
to me as I expected that in a modern piece of ' intelligent ' equipment.
I sure wish your support group had told me that in the first place instead of
sending me something and me having to hunt all over the place and find out after
all this effort that I will not be able to fix the issues inside the battery
powered Reolink devices by creating my own process.
I still have a hard time believing that the Argus PT does not have a way to scan
the area automatically or to use presets as most other pan and tilt systems
have... why would somebody even want the system if it can not perform those
tasks without somebody watching every second of the camera operation ? I thought
that was the reason to have a pan and tilt system instead of stand alone IP
cameras looking at different views.
Well, that shoots down my idea of getting any more of these PT cameras for my
property for the time being... I could have saved a lot of money by getting
multiple cameras for the areas and have the coverage I expected instead of this
' toy ' that would require a dedicated operator 24x7x365 to operate it so the
area could be monitored the way it should be. I could have bought a couple of
the Argus Pro cameras with the cost of this system and looking at other
manufacturers cameras I could have purchased a complete recording system with
multiple cameras for the price I paid for this.
How soon does Reolink plan to have the software / firmware fixed in the battery
system to use those functions that are already included in the client software?
... or should I just scrap this idea and look for a different system to handle
my needs ?
Thank you for finally busting my bubble of hope. I can now scrap the software I
was going to build for this project ( Thank GOD that I only pulled down the
development software that was free from Microsoft instead of spending more cash
for the current professional Visual Studio... I just wasted a few weeks putting
all this together while exploring / researching the issue ).
I am really glad that I noticed the facts when asking about why the presets were
not working in the client software... and the information other people had put
up about the differences in the API on GITHUB that finally brought this to a
resolution.
A VERY disappointed disabled customer,
Robert Gamble.

Dear Robert Gamble,
Thank you for your reply!
According to the forum you sent, I need to explain that all of our
battery-powered cameras can only be operated and connected through the Reolink
APP or Reolink client. We did not design usable API commands.
Regarding the CGI files we sent, this is only suitable for specific models.
Please refer to Which Reolink Products Support CGI_RTSP_ONVIF
Thanks for your patience.
Have a wonderful weekend! 😊

What I am really looking for is the API for the battery powered cameras (
Reolink Argus Pro and Reolink Argus PT ).
I am seeing that there is a difference in the API and the battery power cameras
are using some type of ' proprietary ' API that is not available ( or at least
wasn't available according to a few users on Github... Cannot connect to Reolink
battery powered camera · Issue #15 · Benehiko/ReolinkCameraAPI
Cannot connect to Reolink battery powered camera · Issue #15 · Benehiko/...
I am trying to configure this API for Reolink battery-powered camera. I have
enabled port forwarding for the ca...
)
I want to make sure that the pdf file sent earlier is the actual description of
the commands the battery powered unit has.
When I was going thru the PDF file, I see multiple references in the code that
as I understand, the cameras I have can not use... and this concerns me if I am
going to try to design a program for myself that can call the functions inside
the cameras I have.
The API for my camera must have a different programming reference than what I am
seeing in the PDF file sent to me... and I want the reference to actual code for
the battery powered cameras. That reference should not contain the ' extra '
commands I am seeing in the ' cgi-jsonv1.1.pdf '
I am working with Microsoft Visual Studio 2019 and can get about any Microsoft
product to try ( I've been exploring many of the Microsoft programming languages
over the years to try to keep up to date even while disabled and not working
full time designing control programs )
Am I not asking the right questions about the products I purchased ?
Should I be using some other programming language ?
I am sure I can learn about any of them given the right direction / path.
I feel that even if the PT version does not include the different scan routines
internally to the firmware / OS of the camera, I should be able to write my own
EXTERNAL program version to make the system move to a position, detect movements
and capture an image or video if it detects a movement and then move to the next
location I want it to move to and repeat from what I am seeing in the commands
described in the PDF for the other versions of your cameras.
Thank you for any information you can send. I am trying to make sure I am not
wasting my time with the wrong commands for the cameras I have.
Please remove my mobile phone from the ' CC ' response area, I used my phone to
grab a picture to send to you but did not think about your system adding it into
a response. The only place these replies / responses should go to is my
Rfgamble@yahoo.com email address as the primary contact... I try to send a copy
to my alternate email addresses so I have multiple backups of communication
routes in case something happens ( like getting removed from Facebook and
Twitter and not being able to contact your group thru those areas anymore... a
reason why I suggested MeWe.com which has been a great alternate social media
site with a decent file area with the ability to create different folders for
different cameras, software, etc in their GROUP areas that Facebook did not have
while we were users / members of that now worthless unsocial media site ).
You can contact me on MeWe.com as ' mewe.com/i/robertgamble4 '
( I am also on GAB.com, Spreely.com, Minds.com, TRUMPBOOKusa.com, MAGABOOK.com,
WeGo.social, WIMKIN.com, USA.life and Mumblit.com ... and a few other places but
that list are some of the better social media sites on the internet right now ).
I manage groups on all those sites on a daily basis but made my new ' home ' on
MeWe... I have a separate window on my browser just for those sites.
Again, thank you for putting up with my questions.

Can somebody give me a link to where the real software described in (
cgi-jsonv1.1.pdf ) is at ? The PDF is nice to browse thru but I would really
like the code file it describes ( and anything else you can throw my way
concerning interfacing with the camera system ).
These are interesting devices and can have a lot more functionality with a few
more pieces of software implemented internal to the camera and also in the APP
and PC software that communicates with them.
I am now assembling the software for my ' development system ' so I can start
building the sub-routines to test some of my ideas. I have not been in the
depths of that software for a while since I am using canned software for web
pages and working on social media sites instead of interfaces with hardware like
I used to while building test and control systems... ( many of the systems I
designed and programmed had stepper motors or servo motors and the sensors to
determine their locations and / or control speed and direction )
I envy your development people right now. I missed working with the hardware
platforms when I was moved into working on the communication structures,
networking, file servers and database systems.
Again, thank you for your support. My ' new toys ' as my girl friend calls them
has been keeping me occupied researching.

Thank you for your patience with us!
Yes, you are exactly right. The function on the app cannot be used because this
function has not been applied to argue pt.
Our engineers are trying hard to apply this function to more cameras.
But I beg for your understanding that it may take some time to realize this.

Thank you ! ... this is a great start.
I sure hope your software development team doesn't get mad <G>...
Since the camera I have supposedly doesn't have the preset functions, the
operating software should have not pulled that PRESET screen up<G>... it just
confused me since I was expecting to be able to program it thru the App and the
PC interface since those are normal functions of those type cameras.
Now you have me thinking... is that PRESET a limitation in the APP and PC
interface or is it actually removed from the operating system of the camera...
because if the camera can not physically call those functions to set presets or
what ever else is in the examples, the code will not work if sent to it and will
just return error codes.
This is getting interesting to me... I was looking for ways to make it scan or
run presets and schedule them.. and hoping that the Linux running my camera now
can use those pieces of code you just sent.
The PC and APP for the camera are alright for basic tools to do some things for
the camera but if it could cycle scan and presets and/or schedule moves to
presets would make it so much better for the home user wanting to scan their
backyards or other areas to preset positions and would make this a real nice
system.
I am sure with the experience the programmers have with this system they should
be able to implement that fairly quickly in the APP and in the PC version for
this camera system... and modify the Linux routines to accept these program
calls if needed.
Again, Thank you for this information. I'll be doing more digging on it now.
Please let me know if those calls to the camera will work on that camera... ( I
wouldn't know why it wouldn't ... <G> )

You are doing fine... I am still in earning mode along with trying to catch up
with things after I've been gone from my place in Florida for over a year...
this stuff grows like a jungle in no time.
I had to make multiple sites for alternative and backup presence since Facebook
removed all of the admins and our almost 4000 groups and pages of the US
Minutemen. They constantly changed the rules and at the end had went back over 3
years to find things to put me on suspension and then they ' disabled ' out
accounts so many of us have no way of seeing anything on Facebook or to contact
businesses, our representatives, our government support sites, our distant
families and friends. Many had their small businesses on Facebook with all the
pictures of their items uploaded and lost it all in minutes on August 19, 2020.
At least we can still see things on twitter, even if we can not reply or do most
other things.
MeWe,com also has a decent file area for groups that has a folder system to help
manage the files into different categories... and a real decent chat system too.
It does not take long to get used to but some people used to the restrictions on
Facebook still do not use all the tools available.
When your team builds a site, send me a link and I'll share it in a few places.
..
Btw.. talk to your development group about adding a file manager to the camera
interface so we can easily send them to email or move/copy them to our local
drives ( or other locations if possible )
I've tried to record some small videos and still having problems understanding
where they are ( or have not configured storage correctly yet ?? ) and playback
does not seem to be able to find them from the android interface.
I'm still digging thru help documentation as I get time. Added the memory card
last night and still working on those issues. I keep building up my ' web
library ' of links I find interesting on my web server... makes it easier than
repeating searches<G>
Have a great day !

Hillary,
Your company needs to build an alternative presence on some of the other social
media sites.. MeWe.com is one of the best I have experienced.
Facebook and Twitter both removed many people from using their systems (
censoring / ' fact checking ' bull crap ) so your company should have an
alternative way to contact your customers ( I try to find the ways ) for support
and new product information.

I finally received my MicroSD card and now exploring the settings.
I had the camera monitoring my driveway thru my front window and had just set up
the motion detection. I was working on something else and heard my phone going
off like an email or something had triggered it... and I looked at the PC app
and the Amazon Prime delivery van was sitting at the end of my driveway, my
memory had arrived and the camera had detected the van before the driver even
got out. I met him coming up the driveway and thanked him for the delivery,
I am also impressed with the night vision of the system, I moved it from inside
( The glass was causing a glare from the illumination leds ... even though I
could not see it myself ) to my back porch overlooking the back yard. I was real
tired from everything and laid down and about an hour later the alarm went off.
Our dog had went outside to investigate as she normally does after almost every
noise... and had triggered the motion detection. I was looking over the live
image and seen a flickering light and zoomed into it. A shrub was being moved
enough to let a light flicker thru... but I noticed I could read the numbers on
the boat sitting nearby and it was pitch black.
-------------
Could you please tell me what is the error message when you log in to the app
with your account?
-----
From what I remember, the name or password was not correct. Now I have at 3
different passwords ( one for admin account in the camera, One for your web site
and one for the cloud, which also can use my Google Account to verify me. )
-----
May I ask that you have registered a Reolink account? Please refer to What is an
Reolink Account? and How to Register an Reolink Account?
Please note that you need to register one before log in to the app with an
account.
-------
Yes, as I was reading thru documentation it seemed like a decent idea,
especially with the ' free ' account ( since I am disabled, I have very little
to spare most of the time and save to the point I am sometimes called a penny
pincher )
-------
For how to initially set up the camera on the PC, you are exactly right, and I
am impressed by your expertise in dealing with the configuration of the
camera.😊
----
<G>... I guess growing up in a family that demanded decent school proficiency
helped, along with my technical training in Electrical / Electronic Engineering.
I had to learn many different pieces of bleeding edge technology while designing
test and control systems for our automation in the automotive assembly plant I
worked at over 20 years of my ' professional ' life. I did not expect the
company to send me to a class on every piece of new equipment and often took the
documentation home to read and had shelves of books after awhile. I also had to
learn many different programming languages the same way, build sample programs
myself and build a library of procedures I could recycle. I was in the Microsoft
Windows 95 preview groups, and continue to keep in the preview versions as I
still tinker with new technology. One thing, it is very hard to ask for help on
a subject when you are at the front of the pack debugging it.
----
Enjoy. I've been compiling this email response bit by bit as I'm multitasking<G>
If I run into something I really can't get past, I'll get hold of you again. I
still want a pan and tilt outside camera as my next project<G>... maybe my own
little Christmas present.
BTW, I've been building my own little note area on my web server as I learn this
system... here is the link...

I did write every username and password down this time, and the PC did capture

I added you to my contacts on my Samsung and sent a picture from the app... from
the front room of my house in Florida. I guess I should have made it clear it
was a phone because the response to the text message had a lot of web formatting
in the body of it.
This is a learning experience on your product. Amazon sent me a request to
review the camera but I can not honestly do that until I get it fully
operational to my satisfaction.
Does your company have any ' software tools ' for the owners / technicians to
use to manage these cameras or to help debug issues ? I was browsing around the
files inside the folders of the android phone viewing the contents of the files
but had no way to really decode the information... ( curious engineer <G> )... I
was hoping to find a file that had a name and password I might recognize.
It would be real handy if your company could build a few tools to help manage
incidents like me losing the name and password<G>... every bit of help you can
give your customers helps sell more... and a few of my friends have already
asked about the new link I placed on our web server about the camera. ( I am one
of the few National Admins for the United States Minutemen groups and pages...
Your company should build a presence on MeWe.com since Facebook and twitter
removed thousands of conservative accounts and Trump supporting groups and pages
since August 19, 2020... we can not join Facebook support groups or twitter to
see the information... and I hope you know, conservatives are the ones that
spend more money on items like yours, especially members like we have that are
often owners of businesses concerning security services and supplies )
Again, thanks for the reply to my question.

According to page 6 of the book, it can be but first must be setup by the
android app. This is probably the best communications route since we both have a
copy of what transpired... and I used to have to do this with a German company
that built a relay assembly line for our US plant's ... if I wanted to talk to
them about support, I had to call them in the middle of the night here<G>... so
I am used to odd hours for tech support because I was tech support<G>
I will figure this out ASAP... way too many irons in the fire at the moment, I
have my Straight Talk phone guy on voice trying to fix an old name associated
with my phone getting removed... I get calls for ' Sarah ' and I've had this
phone number for about 14 years.. never really bothered me because I only had 1
friend with a real home phone that seen it but now getting calls from political
and bill collectors hunting that Sarah down too.
Launch at Cape Canaveral at 12:14 this morning... hoping to make it up there to
watch a rocket launch... SpaceX is sending another one up... it is wild watching
them land those back on the ground !
I have until Sunday before the MicroSD cards get here... gave me an excuse to
buy another 1tb card at $15 too<G> ( my girl friend say ' boys and their toys '
) ... I would still like to know if your tech group can fix a login and password
name on that camera without me resetting everything back to factory and starting
again... I know AT&T had a way to access their hardware when the local
administrators were locked out ( especially when they fired the guy without
getting the password to the system and then stuck ME with taking care of it )
Again, thank you for all your responses and I hope you are passing these to the
other 2 names that were on the address list to start. I know how crazy support
can get.
I added the other 2 names of members of your group and cc'd my other email

I sent this mail response to let you know there is some type of problem Google
seems to be having in some of our responses... not really sure what the solution
is but here was the message I got when replying... best way I knew to get the
message thru ad report the issue.
Good luck. I'm still reading and ' playing ' with the camera and about to call
it a night.... even built a little web page on m own web server so I can find
the articles again<G>...

I do not understand why Google did not take this but I wanted you to see the
error message it sent to me as well. I forwarded a copy to my Yahoo mail too.

I am from the United States... I used to live in Ohio and worked for United
Technologies Automotive as an Electronic Engineer, Test and Control System
Engineer, Systems administrator, Network Engineer, Communications Engineer... (
about anything that had to do with computers, phone systems, LANS and WANS,
Servers, etc... I was stuck with it <G> at least until 2001 when Lear
Corporation was selling the assembly lines after purchasing our division from
United Technologies Automotive. I loved the challenges of my different jobs,
always playing with bleeding edge equipment, programs, etc )
I never seen anything about cloud services ( or at least do not remember seeing
anything about it ... working setting the camera up with a phone was a little
unusual for me... I am used to setting things up with a pc and then adding it to
a phone<G> ) I seen something in the book and in the help I've been looking at
all day as I get time. I really didn't want to reset this back to factory but if
I have to go thru it again, I will. I can't believe I didn't write the login
name and password down... but I'm getting spoiled with the password program on
my Firefox browser and I also use Firefox on my android phone... and they all
sync across the platforms and my different laptops I use around here ( I have my
own personal web server on a laptop behind me ).
Sorry ! ... I didn't hit the reply to all on this one... ( i sent the original
from my Yahoo account and did a CC to my Microsoft and Gmail accounts for
reference ) ... please forward to who ever needs it please.

Dear Robert Gamble,
Thank you for contacting Reolink Support!
I am pretty sorry for your experience.
You must be excellent when you are an IT Analyst.
The maximum SD card recommended to you is 64GB. If the SD card is much larger
than this, there may be a compatibility problem.
And if you don't insert an SD card, then you cannot playback the recording, as
the recordings are saved in the SD card. So that is why you see the notice: No
camera SD card is detected. You may not access the playback feature.
For more details to choose an SD card, please refer to Choose Micro SD Card for
Reolink Cameras
May I ask where are you from? Because the cloud service cannot be used in some
countries, and the recordings in the SD card and in the cloud can be the same,
and they are not conflicted.
If you have any other queries, please feel free to contact us.
Best Regards,
Reolink Support Team-Hillary

Is there a way to fix the user name and password in this Argos Pro camera
without having to go thru setup again... I guess I trusted my password program
too much to collect it... I used to write more down than I do now. I can access
it and watch video from my android phone I used to set it up... I was not really
prepared to HAVE to use my phone to set something up like this... I usually do
everything on the PC.
Thank you for any advice.
And PS... make sure the advertisement make it plain that you need a MicroSD card
and the max size this can handle ( a 1TB is about $34 now from Amazon... and
this camera wanted to reformat the 1tb MicroSD I have and tried to use... but I
did not want to lose the other information I had placed on it since I was not
planning on leaving it in there but wanted to test the playback since it said I
couldn't without the SD card but the ad says it can use the ' Cloud ' )... a
little confusing since you have to have it and those cards are so inexpensive
they should be included with the camera anymore.

I also went to your support site and was looking over the ' Firmware and User

Can this camera handle a 1TB microSD memory card ? ( they are only $32 from
Amazon right now )... I have 2 of those but when I put one in the camera it said
it needs formatted but I have already stored some things on it from my laptop so
it is already formatted.
Thank you for any information you can send. I like having the manuals on my PC
so I can read them easier ( getting old and already disabled <G> )
I guess I am lucky I had an android phone... I would have added it to the phone
if I could have but did not plan to try to install it with a phone ( I do not
use this smart phone for much yet... I guess I am used to the older phones with
a real keyboard ( prefer a real bigger keyboard<G> ... my fingers just doesn't
type good on it and the voice recognition seems to always mess up recording a
text )... I prefer a PC laptop anymore if at all possible.
I may have to reset it back to factory and try again... My password program does
not seem to have captured the login name and the password while setting it up
initially on the phone and I was busy and never wrote it down ( I usually take
notes on everything ), I guess I get to reliant on this new technology<G>... (
and I used to be an IT Analyst in 2001 before I had to go on disability because
of a truck that hit me )
