Kenya's president has declared the drought, which has affected as much as half the country, a national disaster.
Uhuru Kenyatta appealed for international aid and said the government would increase food handouts to the most needy communities.
Kenya's Red Cross says 2.7 million people face starvation if more help is not provided.
Other countries in the region have also been hit by the drought, blamed on last year's El Nino weather phenomenon.
In Somalia, nearly half the population, over 5 million, is suffering from food shortages and the UN says there is a risk of famine in several parts of the country.
During the last drought on this scale in 2011, famine killed about 250,000 Somalis.
In a statement, Mr Kenyatta said the government had allocated $105m to tackle the drought which has affected people, livestock and wildlife in 23 of Kenya's 47 counties.
"Support from our partners would complement government's efforts in mitigating the effects of drought," he said.
Mr Kenyatta added that all purchases of food and other items would be made in a transparent way.
"I will not tolerate anybody who would try to take advantage of this situation to defraud public funds," the president said.

The 9th Circuit Court in San Francisco ruled against the Trump administration earlier today when a panel of 3 judges decided against reinstating the administration’s travel ban to 7 majority Muslim nations.

The most liberal circuit court in the United States has predictably ruled against the Trump administration’s executive order on immigration.

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals’ ruling fully denied the Trump administration’s request to overturn the lower court’s lawless nationwide stay of the executive order’s enforcement.

Normally the ruling would mean that the case would be headed on to the Supreme Court, however, late Friday night the court announced that it could now reconsider the case before a larger panel of 11 9th Circuit judges.

The chief judge of the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Sidney Thomas, announced Friday that one of the court’s judges had requested the vote. The judge was not named.

This means that the 25 judges who make up the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals will now vote on rehearing the case, a majority of the judges would have to vote to reconsider for the case to be heard before the larger body.

The fact that one of the judges on the original appeal requested the larger hearing could bode well for the Trump administration as it could mean that the judge believes enough of his colleagues could dissent and hand the White House a victory.

For five hours, Somalis Farhan Ahmed and Mohamed Mualim trekked through the barren and frigid snow-swept fields dividing North Dakota from the Canadian prairies. The snow was knee-deep and it was nearly -20 degrees Celsius.

Then, out of the darkness, a highway appeared. They had arrived in Canada. One of them pulled out their mobile phone to call 911.

"Wow, it was very, very cold," Ahmed, 36, recalled. "You could not walk about the ice. It was too much. Sometimes, it reached our knees. We didn't feel sometimes our hands, sometimes our feet."

Hours earlier, Ahmed, Mualim, and three other African men paid a man $500 to drive them from Minneapolis, Minnesota to North Dakota, just three miles south of the Canadian border. They were underdressed for the winter temperatures, wearing only light gloves and spring jackets.

That’s the question the Knights of Socialism at the University of Central Florida used to advertise their new Leftist Fight Club, which is open to the entire campus – except Republicans.

“Knights for Socialism has decided to host a series of self-defense clinics for anyone that wants to learn how to BASH THE FASH,” the group proclaimed on its Facebook page.

Days after the University of Central Florida faced national outrage over letting an unregistered student group hold an event promoting violence, the Knights for Socialism have taken their radical antics a step further. On Friday, the group held an event where they allowed students to bash Pinatas with the faces of President Donald J. Trump, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and presidential advisor Steve Bannon.

East Orlando Post obtained exclusive footage from UCF College Republican Douglas Mactye, which includes disturbing content involving an elementary to middle school aged student yelling “Kill Trump.” The young children were being encouraged to hit the Pinatas by members of the Knights for Socialism for the duration.

Mactye said it was sad to see his generation act like this. “Time to suck it up, stop crying, and move on.” The footage also shows a bearded man wearing an “Antifa International” sweatshirt, presumably monitoring the event for the Knights for Socialism.

Antifa has been responsible for violent Anti-Trump riots across the country that have resulted in millions of dollars in damage, vicious beatings of Trump supporters, and even shutting down Milo Yiannopoulos’ campus talk at Berkeley. The speech was part of his “Dangerous Faggot” tour that visited college campuses across the United States.
